Inspections & Testing
New York State has adopted The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators (ASME A17.1) as the official standard used by all jurisdictions in New York State relative to elevator code enforcement and is also the National Standard. This code applies to the installation, testing, inspection, maintenance, alteration, and repair of elevators and alternate moving devices.
The frequency of periodic inspections and tests are governed by Table N1 of ASME A17.1; it states that the frequency of periodic inspections and tests shall be established by the AHJ, or Authority Having Jurisdiction. ASME A17.1 also
provides a list of recommended inspection and test intervals in months per type of unit. ALPS can provide this to you upon request.
